Introduction to Nouns (5–10 minutes)
What is a Noun?
Easy Definition: A noun is the name of
a person, place, animal, thing, or idea.
Examples:
- Person:
teacher, John
- Place:
school, London
- Animal:
cat, elephant
- Thing:
book, chair
- Idea:
happiness, honesty
Mnemonic Trick:
N-P-P-A-T-I = Name of Person,
Place, Animal, Thing, Idea

Tip: Every Proper Noun is a noun, but
not every noun is Proper!
Mind Mapping Nouns (10 minutes)
Create a mind map on the board (and give students a
printed one):

Encourage students to fill in their own examples under
each branch.
Activity (10 minutes)
1. Group Work
- Give each
group a mix of flashcards
- Ask them
to sort nouns into types
2. Sentence Hunt
- Ask
students to find 3 nouns in a short paragraph or dialogue
Writing Practice (5–10 minutes)
- Ask
students to write 5 sentences using different types of nouns
- Example:
- John (Proper Noun) has a dog
(Common Noun).
- A group
(Collective Noun) of dancers is on stage.
- Honesty (Abstract Noun) is the best
policy.
- The ring
is made of gold (Material Noun).
Things to Remember
- Nouns can
be singular or plural (dog/dogs)
- Proper
nouns always begin with capital letters
- Abstract
nouns are not seen or touched
- Collective
nouns may be singular or plural based on usage
- Material
nouns are uncountable and usually don’t take 'a' or 'an'
